At The Range

Wild Weather
This afternoon was my semi-regular trip to the rifle range. Today was special because I broke in my new Savage Model 93FVSS in caliber 17 HMR. A lovely new rifle!

A new rifle normally means at least three things: a) you’ve got a freshly mounted scope on the rifle so you’re going through the process of “sighting in” to align the scope with where the rifle is actually pointing, b) you’ve got “break-in” to deal with as like a new pair of boots, a rifle has to be worn in a bit before it starts working smoothly, and c) you’re going through the process of determining what kind of ammunition a particular firearm likes. The same rifle will shoot dramatically differently depending on variables like who manufactured the ammo, how heavy the bullet is, what kind of gunpowder was used, etc. It takes some trial and error.

That part all went well today.  What was dramatic and unexpected was the major storm that hit while we were at the range.  About halfway through our shooting session the skies opened up and sleet started raining down.  Fortunately we shoot from covered positions so it didn’t really affect anything. It was so wild I had to snap a photo with the camera on my cell phone though! Just another day of dramatic weather in Seattle!

I love shooting guns. I keep a little pistol in my nightstand (and yes, it’s loaded)…and for Christmas ( a very long time ago), The PK got me a shotgun.

Wow, that’s such a cool shot.

I miss shooting. The last time I shot, I was in the AF. No… I was married, out of the AF.

I used to shoot black powder muzzle loaders. What a hoot!

I still have a couple of them hanging on the wall, but haven’t shot them in years.

I so miss shooting. I haven’t had a gun in my hands since before I married over 18 years ago. My fav by far was my dad’s 357 magnum. I loved that gun. It’s the only one I asked for when he’s gone. He can give the rest to my brother.

All you people that want to go shooting, just make your way to Seattle… I’m happy to take you to the range for a day! ;-)

I have a decent collection of rifles and pistols, something for everyone (including a .357 Stacie!).

And that’s actually the Renton Fish & Game Club Rick…

I so can’t shoot a gun. I tried once. I hate it, the feeling of something so powerful that can take a life.

I thought I maybe recognized the range, that’s where I used to go with my little brother and shoot flaming wads out of the end of long steel tubes.
My .45 caliber Kentucky long rifle could hit a beer can at 100 yards.
But not if I emptied them first.

Don’t think I’ve ever shot a gun in my life. Not on my to-do list either. Since I’m accident prone anyway, putting a gun in my hand would be catastrophic, I think.

Hea, I was hoping for a sneak preview of “Wild Hogs.” I KNOW you’re going to do a review, right? It’s got you written all over it, in more ways than one. I’m going to see it this Sunday.
