Here’s your chance to help mold my big motorcycle trip next summer. The week of June 13, 2007 I’ll be riding almost 1200 miles from Seattle to Custer, SD to attend a national sport-touring motorcycle meet. In the interest of time I’ll probably take the direct route out with a few side excursions as time allows.
What I need from you folks that may know the areas I’ll be rolling through on the map above, is recommendations for things not to miss. I’m especially interested in photo stops and great road food. Suggestions for alternative routes to the highway are always welcome too!

Unfortunately, that’s one part of the country I’ve never been to. Are you going to Sturgiss?

Sturgis… and ah, no… Sturgis is primarily Harley and cruiser riders. I don’t have anything against either mind you, but as a sport bike rider, the meets I attend focus more on riding and less on “off bike” activities. It’s really two different styles of riding for the most part, and there isn’t a lot of mixing between the two normally.

If I was getting that close, I’d want to stop by and see Leesa!!! Of course if I was within a 1000 miles I’d probably try to stop by!!

That route would be great! Unfortunately, I have never been there and can recommend NOTHING. But I imagine there would lots of great photo pictures…

Are you kidding? I hardly ever go anywhere…and hardly EVER out of the state of Florida.
*sigh* I am SO lame.

Great food… good luck. You’re heading into Miracle Whip Country. We couldn’t figure out why all the salads and sandwiches in ALL the restaurants tasted sweet. Then it dawned on us… ARGH! They’re using Miracle Whip!! Oy.

OOOOOOo OOoooooo I have been on that route a few times (navy=moving)…I have to get out my map and make sure it’s the same route, but I might have some suggestions. And if your that close to Mt. Rushmore (I’m assuming you’re going there?) then Crazy Horse monument is only a hop skip and a jump from that and well worth the visit. I have been there twice once as a 13 year old and again in my late 20’s and was fascinated to see the work in progress. If you like that kind of stuff, it is WELL worth it. I loved it.

Thought you might find this interesting. Christopher St. Cavish — a Shanghai-based chef who quit his job to do a solo motorcycle ride across China for charity — is 22 days into his adventure and finally has his finish line (Qinghai Province, just north of Tibet) in site. And his posts from the road are getting better and better. It’s really a rather unique travelogue.

With the ride, St. Cavish is trying to raise money for a great Shanghai-based charity — Hands on Shanghai’s Rising Stars program — which helps pay school tuitions for poor urban youth.
