October 11 @ 8:30 amAm I the only one that has hang-ups about food? For some reason I have issues with the “freshness” of food. I must have had an episode with bad food when I was young and it has definately influenced me as an adult.
For example, I have what I call the “3 Day Rule.” Open food items left in the fridge for three days must be disposed. Leftovers, milk, juice, etc. Anything I think might spoil. Obviously this doesn’t apply to things like margarine, but if I don’t remember how old that bottle of grape jelly is, out it goes! Things like bread I’ll inspect carefully before using.
One effect of this is that I tend to buy the smallest size of everything so that I use it up quickly. Grocery stores must love me!
Am I the only one? *sigh*

My friend Amy is like that somewhat…always looking at expiration dates. I go by smell and vision, if it looks or smells funky out it goes…if in doubt at all out it goes, but sometimes with store bought stuff, if it passes the vision and smell test and I’m skeptical, I do a tiny little taste test…if it’s homecooked and has meat in it, I’m with you, OUT after 3 days!
Better safe than sorry…

Oh man. I’m not quite that bad, but I definitely annoy the people I live with. I have to examine strawberries for mold, onions for black spots under the skin, and I ALWAYS sniff the milk. If it’s questionable, I just can’t enjoy it. So why bother?

You’re definitely in good company.
I tend to be pretty sensitive to things like that.
I won’t buy fish from any grocery store if I can SMELL the fish department at 10 paces. Or even 5 paces. You’re not supposed to be able to smell it!
I’m very careful, and picky about some leftovers. My nose is also very sensitive, and I can tell when something is about to turn (5, 4, 3, 2….). The FBI should hire me. lol
Altho not sure it would do any good, unless I could “smell” when Bush was about to do something stupid. Then again, my nose wouldn’t get much of a break would it?

My hubs is the same way. I sometimes have to stop him from throwing out something that is just fine.

as Homer said about his sub sandiwch that was growing mushrooms…”It’s Still good, It’s still good!”

Oh Michael. I’m the same way! Craziness at its finest! I can’t go the full week on milk. And fruit? OMG it better not have a blemish on it!

Glad to know I’m not alone on this!

I’m a “gotta smell it” kinda girl.
Wait…let me rephrase that.
If a food item has been open for a day or two and I go to eat it, I MUSt smell it first. Any HINT of funky smell and I toss it. Better safe than sorry! BLECH!

Nice to know Stacie’s a “gotta smell it” kinda girl. lol

Just to clarify, that was Stacy, not Stacie, I’m a vision girl first…then a smell it girl…then a taste it girl…wait..we’re still talking about questionable food right?LOL
October 12 @ 10:45 am
Frankly, I’m not sure what we’re talking about now… *tugs at shirt collar*

I start to question the food after 5-7 days. I do keep a roll of masking tape and a marker in a drawer by the frig. When I first put something into the frid I put a small strip of tape with the date on it on the item (except milk, butter and stuff like that). Then I have a better idea how old something is. I do this with my spices when first opened. If they’re still around after a year, I toss them and replace them when needed.

Oh I am very freaky about food- I think just about everthing is “old”- even if it isn’t!
